Holger Mies, business development director of one of the largest toy makers in the world Hasbro Russia (the client of our media agency OMD MD) tells about his gorgeous morning on Red Square and how tricky can be the Russian language intonation.
Как долго ты живешь в России?
На самом деле я живу в Таллинне, а в Москву наведываюсь на неделю, другую. В российском бизнесе я работаю уже около 5 лет, а в качестве директора по маркетингу компании Hasbro – последние 3 года. Мой опыт «жизни в России» ограничен краткосрочными деловыми поездками. В этом плане я считаю себя полноценным экспертом – могу посоветовать, например, неплохой отель в Москве.
How long do you live in Russia?
Actually I am privately based in Tallinn, Estonia and travelling on a weekly base to Moscow and back. So, my experience of “living in Russia” is limited to hotel stays. But on that field I consider myself as an expert and could give some good advice for a nice hotel in Moscow! Businesswise I know the Russian market for more than 5 years and in my role as marketing director for Hasbro Russia I am working since 2 years in Moscow.
Откуда ты родом?
Я родился в маленькой деревеньке Эльгендорф, между Франкфуртом и Кёльном, неподалеку от известного винного региона на берегу Рейна, что, собственно, и объясняет мою любовь к вину. Это место невероятной красоты, с долинами и видом на реку. В такие живописные, уютные деревеньки приезжает много туристов. Нет ничего лучше теплого летнего вечера на заднем дворе винодельни с бокалом холодного «Riesling», которым славится наш регион. Еще он известен крайне упрямыми жителями, но, слава богу, ни от одного из своих знакомых не слышал о себе ничего подобного.
Where are you from?
I am originally from a small village called “Elgendorf” in the center of Germany, between Cologne and Frankfurt, close to the famous German Wine Region at the river Rhine what might explain my personal interest in all kind of wines. The region has a great country side with amazing views on the river and valleys. Pitoresque, cozy villages and small cities attract tourists and visitors. There’s nothing better than enjoying a nice summer evening in the backyard of a wine farmer with a glass of cold “Riesling”, the famous wine from that area.
People from my region have in Germany the reputation of being very stubborn, hopefully nobody who knows me will confirm!
Как отреагировала твоя семья и друзья на решение переехать в Россию?
Целиком и полностью одобрили. В основном, поддержка исходила от отца, а друзья уже привыкли к тому, что я в постоянных разъездах. После жизни в Германии я на некоторое время осел в Голландии, а последние четыре года работы в Hasbro дали мне возможность посетить еще и экзотичные места – Южную Африку, ОАЭ, Саудовскую Аравию и Израиль.
Моя девушка тоже была довольна, когда я согласился на работу в Москве, ведь это дало нам возможность наладить и лучше организовать нашу жизнь в Эстонии, а ведь мы оба сильно заняты.
What was your family/friends reaction for your decision to go to Russia?
They fully supported my decision, mostly driven by the fact that my family and my friends are already used to the situation that I have a “habit” to look for international challenges. After my time in Germany I was some time based in Holland and in the last 4 years I had a quite international role at Hasbro what gave me the chance to experience such “exotic” places during my business trips such as South Africa, Dubai, Saudi Arabia or Israel.
My girl friend indeed was very happy for my decision to take the chance working in Moscow as it gives us the opportunity to better align and structure our private life in Estonia with our business lives.
На что похож русский язык?
К сожалению, мне тяжело дается изучение иностранных языков. Все время пытаюсь заставить себя выучить русский, но предчувствую, что это будет непросто. Я привык «выживать» при помощи трех слов – «прямо, налево и направо», чтобы показывать таксисту дорогу. Описать русский язык сложно. Я прислушиваюсь к интонации, потому что не понимаю самих слов. Недавно я спросил своего коллегу, почему он так грубо, как мне показалось, разговаривал с одним из наших поставщиков. Он мне ответил: «Да вовсе нет! Я лишь похвалил его за хорошо выполненный проект».
What does Russian language look like?
Unfortunately I am not a big talent in speaking and learning foreign languages – I am fighting with myself to start learning Russian, but know that this is going to be tough. Basically I try to survive with 3 words – “straight, left and right”, what helps already a lot to guide your taxi through Moscow to get to the place you want to. The “look” of the language is difficult to describe. I’m much more listening to the sound – as I don’t understand the content – how people pronounce their sentences and the tonality the way they are talking. Recently I asked my colleague, why he was talking so harsh to one of our suppliers (It sounded harsh to ME) – his answer was, “not at all. I just made them a compliment how good they executed the project”.
Что тебе больше всего нравится в русских?
В Германии мы говорим «твердая скорлупка, мягкое ядро». Так, наверное, я описал бы и русских. За поведением, которое кажется грубым (особенно если учитывать то, как тут водят машины!), скрываются очень приятные люди. В нашей московской команде много молодых ребят, я получаю удовольствие, когда вижу, насколько они мотивированы и готовы работать над собой. Это по-хорошему заряжает.
What do you like in Russians most of all?
In German we say “Rough shell – week core” and that would be how I would describe Russians in general. Behind a behavior what might appear sometimes harsh – particularly when you judge by the driving style of people in Moscow – there‘s a warm personality what you discover after a while and when people start building trust in you. We have a lot of young people in our local team and it’s a great pleasure to experience the great motivation and excitement they show and how they are eager to learn and develop themselves. That gives me also a lot of energy.
Что тебе больше всего понравилось в москвичах и что не понравилось?
Я до сих пор потрясен невероятными размерами вашей страны и тем, как быстро она развивается. С первого моего приезда в вашу столицу шесть лет назад многое изменилось. Для меня своеобразным мерилом является аэропорт Шереметьево. Шесть лет назад он снился мне в ночных кошмарах: страшное здание, длинные очереди, бесконечное ожидание и хмурые таможенники. Сейчас же построены новые терминалы, везде светло и ярко, никаких больших очередей у стоек, все больше милых девушек в униформе, которые вам улыбаются! Что мне не нравится тут? Ответ не будет оригинальным, зато правдивым – это невероятные московские пробки! И удивительным на фоне всего этого кажется спокойное отношение самих москвичей к тому, что после обеда движение встает намертво.
What things surprise/annoy you in Russians most of all?
Surprising is for me is still the enormous size of the country and how fast it is developing. I remember being first time in Moscow 6 years ago – a lot has changed since then. Good example for me is when you look at the airports like Sheremetyevo. 6 years ago it was a nightmare to travel there: awful airport building, long queues, waiting up to 2 hours at the immigration and bad mooded officials in their uniforms. Today in the new terminals everything is bright and friendly, no big queues anymore at the counters and more and more nice ladies in uniform welcome you even with a smile! Annoying – and that is not very creative answer, but true – is the daily incredible traffic on the streets of Moscow with more than 3 million cars and then surprising the patience of locals when traffic regularly collapses every day in the afternoon.

Одно из самых прекрасных и незабываемых впечатлений у меня связано с Красной площадью. Однажды, где-то в полвосьмого утра, я со своим бывшим начальником вышли на пробежку вдоль Кремля, и мы решили сделать «круг почета» по Красной площади. Солнце только взошло, все было освещено таким мягким утренним светом, а вокруг тишина и покой. Это место впечатляет, оно словно напоминает о своей значимости, особенно сквозь историческую призму. Если вы не были на Красной площади, вы многое потеряли.
What place in Moscow would you recommend for your friends to visit in Russia?
One of my greatest and most emotional experiences in Russia/Moscow is linked with the red square. One time I was running in the morning with my former boss at 7.30 along the Kremlin and we took a round on the red square – it was just the time when the sun came up and gave the whole area a wonderful light and peaceful atmosphere. This place makes you standing and wondering with an open mouth, considering all the historic events what happened here and that this place kept his dignity and character over all the centuries. Something will miss in you biography if you haven’t been here.
Ты общаешься с соотечественниками в России? Где вы обычно встречаетесь?
К сожалению, общаюсь реже, чем хотелось бы. Иногда я пересекаюсь с иностранцами на деловых встречах. Если они оказались в России по таким же деловым обстоятельствам, то это приводит к менее формальному общению, мы делимся своим «экспатским» опытом. Недавно я стал ходить на мероприятия, организованные «Internations»: там собираются иностранцы, живущие и работающие в Москве. В прошлый раз нас было около 55 человек разных национальностей, настоящее мультикультурное сообщество, и мы неплохо пообщались.
Do you communicate with your compatriots in Russia? Where do you use to meet?
Unfortunately much less than I would like to. Sometimes my business and meetings with partner from the entertainment environment brings me in contact with some interesting people from abroad , sharing the same “destiny” with me and leads to some half private/half business related talks and sharing experiences. Recently I started visiting the events from the “Internations” group, gathering expats together, living and working in Moscow. Last event was visited by people from 55 nations – quite mixed and colorful group – had a lot of good talks there!
Что ты пьешь у себя на родине?
Я немец по происхождению, и у меня природная тяга к пиву. Тем не менее, я считаю себя большим любителем вина, к нему меня «приучил» отец. Предпочитаю испанские вина, lá Tempranillo, Rioja. Но для того, чтобы согреться в холодную эстонскую зиму, я иногда пью чай с Vana Tallinn («Старый Таллинн»), эстонский тёмно-коричневый крепкий ликер на основе рома.
What alcohol do you use to drink in your country?
Due to my German nature there’s a natural preference to “Bier” in all kind of forms. Nevertheless I consider myself as a big wine friend – driven by good “education” of my father. My favorites are the Spanish wines a lá Tempranillo, Rioja etc. However, to keep yourself warm in long and cold Estonian winters I take from time to time during that period a hot tea with a Vana Tallin, kind of a robust rum-based liqueur, to face the deep freezing temperatures.

Так как живу я в основном в Эстонии, то «Terviseks!» («Ваше здоровье») я произношу чаще, чем немецкий «Prost» («На здоровье»). Некоторые иностранцы пытаются запомнить слово «Terviseks» по аналогии с фразой «Terrible sex».
A toast with translation.
As I am privately living in Estonia I use to toast “Terviseks” (“To your health”) much more often than the German “Prost” in the recent past. Some foreigners try to remind “Terviseks” with connecting it to “Terrible sex”…
